A Guided Workshop for Authors
Are you looking for new ways to serve your audience and extend your impact?
Consider creating a workbook—either as a companion to an existing book or class, or as a product that stands on its own.
A well-designed workbook can:
- Deepen your impact. Encourage people to engage actively with your ideas, rather than passively reading.
- Extend your reach. Attract people who prefer interactive, hands-on exploration over traditional books or more intensive courses.
- Support your business or teaching. Use the workbook in workshops, coaching, or online programs.
- Boost your book’s value. A workbook may attract a new audience to an existing book.
Creating a great workbook is part writing, part experience design. In this workshop, you’ll:
- Clarify your purpose. Define what you want the workbook to do—for your reader and for you.
- Make a plan. Each week includes a hands-on assignment to move your project forward.
- Get expert and peer feedback. Share your ideas in a supportive small group and refine them based on feedback.
- Build momentum. Walk away with a clear plan to finish your workbook.
You don’t have to figure it out alone—and this will be fun, I promise.
How this Workshop Works
This workshop spans three weeks and combines work done on your own and with the group. Every week you’ll receive the following:
- A video explaining key ideas and concepts
- An assignment to work on (and in one case, to send in ahead of time.)
In the 90-minute meetings, we’ll discuss the assignments. You’ll get the chance to share your work and test some of your questions and approaches with the broader group. (You may even meet a new writing friend!) I will also offer critique and feedback.
What We’ll Cover
Week 1: Overall workbook strategy
- Clarify what you want from your workbook and how it fits with your existing book and/or other offerings.
- Look at workbooks in your slice of the adult market.
- Identify your key audience.
- Start the plan for your own workbook.
Week Two: Content outline and strategy
Dive deeper into what the workbook should look like and how to approach it.
- Why will the user pick up the workbook?
- What will they get from it? A personal transformation? Specific instructions?
- What’s the balance of explanation and exercise?
- What format(s) will you use?
Week Three: Engaging the reader
- Explore different types of questions and interactivity. You’ll learn how to construct questions or prompts to lead the reader into writing or engaging. And, you can get a few of us to try those questions and see if we get stuck.
- Explore production issues and possibilities.
By the end, you should have a good idea of how to create an effective workbook, and a plan to get it done. You may even meet new writing friends or people willing to be first testers.
